2018 New Year Resolution

Today is the last day of 2017. As we are moving toward 2018, it is also time to make a new year resolution. So in the year of 2018, there are many thing I have to do. However I shall made 2 resolution for year 2018 which I wanted to achieve the most.

So below is my 2 new year resolution:

1) Achieved dividend income of $6000. (currently around $3900)

This should not quite tough as I looking to inject another $20k into my portfolio. By achieving an annual return rate of 7.5% should be able to get me somewhere there.

2) I need to lose weight! Need to lose around 20kg. (currently at 96kg)

I shall call this #dualengzai project lol. This is where the tricky part is. I have been super slack for the past 2 years which allowed my weight and width to increase exponentially. Hope to do more exercise, eat less and healthy for the coming year. I shall rope in Mrs together in this project.

In order for the 2 resolution to be achieved, I shall do a monthly update to keep track on the progress.

With this I wish everyone a very happy new year.

December 2017 Portfolio Update and 2017 Portfolio Performance Summary

I have set up Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) Account with OCBC this month. Like the name suggested, it is a voluntarily supplementary account on top of CPF. Setting up this account was mainly for reducing tax for the financial year of 2018. By using the tax calculator provide by OCBC, I could have pay lesser tax up to $1071 in 2018 with injection of $15300 into the account. Do note that fund is SRS will not be entirely tax free, but more of delayed tax. I shall not elaborate further as information about SRS is widely available online.

As this $15300 that injected to SRS can be invested, I have included this amount into part of my portfolio. I have in fact bought 10000 shares of AA Reits using this fund at $1.36/share. This current valuation is not extremely cheap but is below its NAV at $1.39 with dividend yield of 9.38%. Since fund in SRS are not supposed to be touch till age of 62 without incurring penalty, I decided to invest it in Reits for the higher dividend return.

Overall portfolio for month of December has increased by $11030 with fresh injection of cash $9855 and capital appreciation of $175. I have also deposited $1000 to stashaway and to date the return is $11 after forex impact.

For year 2015 and 2016 I have only 1 equity in my portfolio which is Keppel Corp. Keppel Corp was doing badly for year 2016 due to weakening of oil price and only recently that the counter start to run. I started more actively purchasing and selling shares some where in middle of 2017. So far I am quite glad that my portfolio have stopped losing money and i still able to achieve double digit return in year of 2017. Hopefully return in 2018 will be equally or even better than year of 2017. Wish everyone to have a prosperous year ahead!

November 2017 Portfolio Update

November was not a bad month for my portfolio. Overall portfolio increased by $5021.4 (+10.1%). The increased was mainly due to capital injection of $3866 (+7.77%). Total capital appreciation was $771.4 (+1.55%) and another $384 contributed by dividend received for month of November.

With ending of November, this conclude the total dividend received for year of 2017. The breakdown as follow:

Dividends Collected (based on ExDate)
YearCurrencyTotalMonthlyAvg CostAvg Cost Yield
2016SGD6005013,4304.47%
2017SGD1,14410427,507.814.54%
I only started to be more actively manage my finance starting mid of 2017. The dividends received for this year was somehow on par with what I have received last year. The actual annual gain was slightly higher at 5.84% due to gain from sales of stocks.

I have also started to use Robo-advisor to invest, in this case is Stashaway. The main purpose for using Stashaway was as a form of geographical diversification for my investment. So far i have injected $1000 for month of October and another $1000 for month of November. The return so far I would say slightly dissapointing due to the currency impact. For the $1000 i have put in October, the return was $16.65 (1.6%). However there is this currency impact of $12.25% which cause the actual return in SGD to be $4.40 which I feel that the impact for currency exchange has drag the return of this portfolio by quite a bit. I will continue to monitor on this as 1 month is not enough to judge how this investment can fare for long term.

Total Assets (SGD) = $1,004.40
Portfolio Returns (SGD) = $16.65
Currency Impact (SGD) = -$12.25
Total Returns (SGD) = $4.40 (0.4%)

About me

I am just an average employee working in a big organisation that wish to make his money work harder to fund for his early retirement.

October 2017 Portfolio Update

October has been a good month for the portfolio. The gain of portfolio from month of September is $2068 (+4.34%). I have since sold off Keppel corp at $7.01 after it has run with total gain of $1560 which work out about 11.6% after holding it for close to 2 years. The timing for the sale was not good i must admit. I was worried that the run was momentarily and couple with release of financial result which I have no confident off. Keppel financial result ended better than expected and the share price has run off to $7.50 range.

I initiated position with Far East Orchard at $1.535/share and Duty Free international at $0.275/share with the funds from sale of Keppel.
